A Night on the Hooker Valley Track

From $450.00

About this Photograph

Many walk the Hooker Valley Track during the day while exploring the magnificent Aoraki Mount Cook National Park and would be familiar with the view of the distant peak of Aoraki with the Hooker River in the foreground.  There are a much smaller number of us who explore this part of the park by night.  The Hooker River lies close to the track in parts and on a calm, still night, you hear nothing other than the thundering roar of the river tumbling over rocks on its way towards the Tasman Valley and the occasional crash of a distant avalanche.  It was against this soundtrack that I setup my camera to make an image I’d planned for some years, but not yet been able to execute due to inclement weather.  I had my tripod balanced on three large boulders in the river while rock-hopping to make adjustments between exposures – this was a complex image to shoot requiring some 80+ exposures to be shot!  Fortunately, the shoot went according to plan and I managed to avoid slipping into the icy cold water of the river below!  So in the final photograph, we have a detailed view of the Milky Way arching across the northern sky, appearing from behind the summit of Aoraki.  Thin layers of wispy cloud spill over the mountain ranges to the left of the photograph while the upper slopes of Aoraki are brightened by a little moonlight just before it sets to the west.

This photograph was awarded a Silver award at the 2022 NZIPP Iris Awards.
